Getting 1960s armrests right in 2026
Open the door of an unrestored classic and look at the armrest. If it's original, it's probably cracked, hardened, or crumbling to powder under the vinyl. That's not neglect, it's chemistry. And it's why restoration foam is a molding problem, not an upholstery problem.
Why the originals die
Factory armrests and interior parts from the 1950s through the mid-70s were molded foam over a metal core, and the formulations of that era break down with decades of heat cycles and UV. Once the foam goes, no amount of re-covering saves the part, the shape itself is gone.
Why you can't just carve a replacement
An original armrest was an integral-skin molded part: the foam and its tough outer skin formed together in the mold, with the mounting hardware embedded. Cutting a lookalike from sheet foam gets the silhouette and loses everything else, the crisp factory edges, the skin that takes vinyl properly, the hardware in the right place. Doing it right means doing it the way the factory did: in a mold.
What replication actually involves
Tooling built from an original part, a formulation matched to the factory feel, and molding that reproduces the details a judge (or your own hand on the door) will notice. That's why properly replicated parts for cars from 1950 onward move through restoration specialists, the parts exist because somebody maintained the molds and the recipes for decades.
If your part doesn't exist anymore
Not every armrest, steering-wheel insert, or seat foam is in someone's catalog. If you have one restorable original, even a rough one, it can serve as the basis for tooling. That's a conversation worth having before you settle for close-enough.
